Marblehead, Ohio - Marblehead Peninsula
Marblehead, Ohio
Situated between Lake Erie on the north and Sandusky Bay on the south, the village of Marblehead sits on a peninsula approximately 40 miles east of Toledo.
The village is a hot-bed of water-related activities most of the year with public and private boat launch services and many area marinas.
The Village of Marblehead, with a population of just 762, is home to the busiest United States Coast Guard station on the Great Lakes as well as the famous Marblehead Lighthouse, the oldest continuously operating light on the Great Lakes. Built in 1821 of native limestone, the lighthouse warns ships about the rough weather along Marblehead Point where northeastern weather can whip up 12-foot waves.
While the village may be small, it is a bustle of activity with its quaint downtown shops and restored buildings. There are several art galleries in Marblehead, including one owned by nationally known artist, Ben Richmond. There are also plenty of restaurants and antique shops along the downtown streets.
Marblehead is also home to the Lakeside daisy, a small yellow wild flower that blooms only on the peninsula and in two areas of Canada. The large Marblehead quarry occupies the interior of the area and loads quarry stone at the nearby docks.
Just a few miles from Sandusky’s Cedar Point Amusement Park, Marblehead is the perfect getaway for a leisurely stroll or shopping trip.
